Background of the Study
Patient history-taking is a crucial skill in nursing practice, serving as the foundation for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and patient care (Akinmoladun & Oyedepo, 2024). Early exposure to patients during clinical training has been identified as a key factor in improving nursing students’ confidence in this skill (Okoro et al., 2023). Modibbo Adama University, Yola, offers comprehensive nursing education that includes both theoretical learning and clinical exposure. However, it remains unclear how early patient exposure influences students' confidence in their ability to take patient histories, a skill vital to effective patient care. Early interaction with real patients can potentially enhance students’ communication, assessment, and clinical skills, contributing to their overall preparedness for nursing practice. This study aims to investigate how early patient exposure affects nursing students' confidence in taking patient histories at Modibbo Adama University, Yola.
Statement of the Problem
Nursing students often struggle with the initial phase of patient care, especially in the area of history-taking, due to limited exposure to real patients. Despite the theoretical training in history-taking, many students report feeling unprepared and anxious when faced with real clinical encounters (Nwachukwu et al., 2024). This lack of confidence may affect the quality of patient care provided. Modibbo Adama University has integrated patient exposure into their curriculum; however, the impact of this exposure on students’ confidence in history-taking remains underexplored. This study seeks to examine how early exposure to patients influences nursing students' ability to confidently take patient histories.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of early patient exposure on nursing students' confidence in taking patient histories at Modibbo Adama University, Yola.
2. To identify the types of patient exposure that enhance nursing students' confidence in history-taking.
3. To evaluate nursing students' perceptions of the impact of early patient exposure on their clinical preparedness.
Research Questions
1. How does early patient exposure affect nursing students' confidence in taking patient histories at Modibbo Adama University, Yola?
2. What types of patient exposure contribute most to nursing students’ confidence in history-taking?
3. How do nursing students perceive early patient exposure in terms of its effect on their clinical competence?
Research Hypotheses
1. Early patient exposure does not significantly affect nursing students' confidence in taking patient histories at Modibbo Adama University, Yola.
2. There is no significant relationship between types of patient exposure and nursing students’ confidence in history-taking.
3. Nursing students' perceptions of early patient exposure do not significantly influence their clinical competence.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, who have had early exposure to patients. Limitations include potential differences in the quality of patient exposure and the variation in students’ self-reported confidence.
Definitions of Terms
• Early Patient Exposure: The introduction of nursing students to real patient interactions at an early stage in their education.
• Confidence in History-Taking: The level of assurance and preparedness nursing students feel when collecting patient histories in a clinical setting.
• Patient History: A detailed record of a patient's health background, including medical conditions, family history, and lifestyle, essential for diagnosis and treatment planning.
